They're aware of it, and working on a fix for it. I have to select 'speaker' as the output to watch my movies and I don't think that gives me 5.1. Is this the same issue other people are reporting or is it just a config problem on my end? It is connected to my 5.1 AV unit via optical cable. I'm using a usb soundblaster x-fi surround 5.1 pro, which in windows 8 worked perfectly with Dolby Live and 5.1 movies. Dolby Live gives me an error if I try to use it. I just see 2 channel with various bitrates, and Dolby Live. In the dropdown for Default Format in the sound properties, If I to a test, I just hear front left, front right. My issue is that if I select SPDIF-Out then I get 2 channels only, so if I'm watching a 5.1 movie, I usually just hear background sounds and no voices. I am not sure if they're related to my own problems or not, perhaps someone can advise. There's a few issues some of which I don't really understand. Optical has the clarity of digital, with the "heart" of analog, and you pick up all the subtleties that are missed in PCM's lower bit DTS via optical is not only superior, its VASTLY superior. Will automatically convert that audio stream to match what you tell it to send to the receiver, which is either a 16-bit or 24-bit signal, usually either 48 KHz or 96 KHz sample rate, at 320 kbps bit rate maximum. That's what I use, with the VL Sound output plugin. As an example lets say you're using Winamp to play an M4A audio file. Any digital signal has a sample rate and a data rate (bit rate). PCM may be uncompressed, but its still a digital signal.

The HDMI carries my video signal (1080p) and a 7.1 channel, 24-bit PCM 96k audio signal.

Motherboard, ASRock Fatal1ty "Killer" gaming board with Realtek ALC 1150 codec, using DTS Connect: Neo PC (7.1 channel). The HDMI is through an EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked (soon to add a second one via SLI). I also connect via both HDMI and Optical to a Sony 7.1 receiver, then send the video via HDMI to my LG 55" HD/3D TV mounted on the wall above it. I know my music, and I know my computers. I'm an electronics technician, musician, and DJ.

So far, the DTS encoding is working for me in windows 10 now and I've been running it since i posted the tested videos a couple pages back. So if you can use HDMI, i'd use it as a work around until this is resolved for your system. Optical is better but in terms of sound quality HDMI is superior. well that isnt possible with HDMI for audio unfortunately because it carries video and windows sees it as a display device it puts to sleep. To play a podcast or music and let your monitors go to sleep mode while the audio continues to play. since its HDMI, windows will put the device to sleep with the rest of your monitors.

(which is little btw at 480p etc.) Then you have 5.1 audio as best as its going to get really. I wish it could only stream audio but it carries both always so you have to set the resolution for that receiver fairly low to minimize any gpu performance impact The only downside to this is, HDMI carries a video stream no matter what. I have my monitors hooked up via displayport, and i used the HDMI audio out for my audio which connects to the same sony reciever that i used I have been doing this for a while ever since i became an insider and found out DTS encoding was broken. Its technically superior to DTS in every way, its uncompressedĥ.1 audio.

I'm not sure if you or others here are using a home theatre receiver to connect to opticallly but if you are, you can still use HDMI for PCM 5.1 or even more channels if your setup has them.
